July 4, 2007 Avril Lavigne Gets Sued!
There appears to be trouble in faux-punk land! It turns out that Avril Lavigne’s summer hit “Girlfriend” might not have been original at all. She is currently being sued by The Rubinoos, a powerpop band from the 1970s. The fact of the matter is this: Avril totally ripped-off of the Rubinoos’ classic 1979 single, “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.” The choruses are exactly alike but they never gave any credit.
Compare the lyrics of the chorus yourself:
Avril: “Hey, hey, you, you, I don’t like your girlfriend”
Rubinoos: “Hey, hey, you, you, I wanna be your boyfriend”
According to the credits, that would be none other than Lukasz Gottwald, aka Luke Gottwald, aka Dr. Luke, the songwriting machine whose written massive hits for the likes of Kelly Clarkson (“Behind These Hazel Eyes” and “Since U Been Gone,” which I kinda sorta like). I smell a payout is coming real soon.

Well lyrically the Behind these Hazel Eyes Song is better than SYBG but I think that was mainly because Kelly Clarkson wrote half of the former. The latter is catchy but awful lyrically. Dr. Luke is also the guy who’s been trying to recreate Since you been gone with the Veronicas and Pink. So he’s ripping himself off and I don’t doubt he’s ripped off others too.

i like the old one much better. it’s cuter and more honest. the avril one is whiny and bitchy and seems more mean. ‘i don’t like your girlfriend’ ect. whatever.

Yes i would have to agree w/ Lyss..avril’s version does sound whiny not so bitchy though..the whiny-ness of it excels it.
When i first heard her ‘new’ single the first thing that came 2 mind was that it looked alot like a gwen stefani/fergie clip..but only way lamer..wth is she trying 2 prove
