May 10, 2007 Ask B. Scott…

This one was too good not to share! One of our love muffins, Nelson, from Ohio wrote in with this week’s Ask B. Scott. Here it is…

B. Scott,

Love the site! Love the fashion tips especially. I want your opinion. I’m not big but I want to know if it’s okay for big people to wear skinny jeans? I saw someone last week with a pair that almost ended my vision. What do you think?

Oh my! Peep the response after the jump…

When it comes to any type of trend or fashion choice, people must always be honest with themselves. Ask yourself four questions:

a) How do I look?
b) Am I comfortable?
c) Is this me?
d) Does this send out the right message?

If you can answer those four questions and be honestly confident, then I say forget the “rules” of fashion and live your life forging your own style with creative control of your clothing choices.
However, certain people don’t understand that everyone can’t necessarily pull off everything. And, thus, we have the skinny jeans debacle…

You must have a certain body type, period, to pull off skinny jeans. It’s not just a question of big or small. If you are outrageously tall, you could potentially look like an overgrown ostrich in skinny jeans. If you are short, skinny jeans may help you “appear” as though you are taller. Jude Law is naturally average height at about 5′10″. However, in the image below, the skinny jeans help to accentuate his height and help him to appear slimmer. The rule of thumb is applicable to both men and women. If it’s not a good look, let them go!

His shoes…not so much!

However, skinny jeans are about proportion. If you are very top-heavy, low rise or regular waist skinny jeans will not be a good look. Unfortunately, a lot of people that are heavier in size have bigger waists that will not suit the look and fit of the “skinny” jean style. In addition, if a person is thicker in the thigh region and is attempting the skinny jean look, it would be very unbecoming. Nice thighs and thick thighs are too different ball parks. A person with nice thighs and legs would be able to showcase their assets in a skinny jean. The latter would look a hot fiery mess!

In conclusion, to thine own self be true! Be honest and real. If you put on some “skinny” jeans and you feel as though you are working the hell out of them – proceed! But if you are on the streets and you start to turn heads (in a crazy way), I’d suggest going back home and rectifying the situation!

By all means, you wouldn’t want to look like this…

…Or would you, love muffins?
