There’s a new ice cream shop in town, and it’s putting your favorite sweet shop to the test. it’s called Milk. Bret Thompson, previously a manager for various Patina group restaurants, ventured on his own to pursue an independent business, and the result was a shop that will feed you from beginning to end. With a menu that offers sandwiches, salads, ice cream, cookies and cake, you can literally have your dessert and eat it too.

The interior is simple and clean. There are small chrome colored tables for those who want to enjoy their iced cafe latte indoors, but there is also limited outdoor seating for the ones who like to catch some rays. Right at the corner of Third St. and Poinsettia Pl. in West Hollywood, you can stop in for a snack after working up an appetite browsing the shops and other boutiques that line this busy section of the neighborhood. And by snack, we mean splendiferous goodies sure to satisfy all of your cravings.

The glass cases were full of baked goods ranging from an Easter influenced malted milk chocolate cake topped with colorful, egg shaped malt balls. There was also a
blue velvet cake—an interesting variation of the Southern classic, the red velvet cake. There were chocolate cakes, carrot cakes, individual strawberry shortcakes, croissants, sweet loaf breads, blondies, brownies and cookies of course. (Try the Ooey Gooey Double Chocolate Chip if you’re in need of a cocoa fix!) My favorites were the
white chocolate walnut crumbles and the chocolate hazelnut madeleines.

And then there are the ice cream delights. With about 16 flavors to choose from, you’ll most likely have to pick between two or three flavors that fit your taste. From mint chocolate chip to
banana dulce de leche, there are a variety of interesting flavors. Take a look at the ice cream menu and sort through the options—a cup or cone, sundaes, malts, floats and shakes. Or be bold and choose from the pre-made ice cream sandwiches, bars and my favorite—the milkie. These are not your $1.25 Diddy Riese ice cream sandwiches. Switch out the usual cookie and opt for two flavored meringues. The ice cream bars are huge, and they’re as homemade as you can get without churning the ice cream yourself. But it’s the milkie that takes the cake! Tiny, bite-sized bon bons designed perfectly to pop right into your mouth.
Coffee toffee and mint crunch were the top two milkies in my book. At just $0.25 each, you can try them all.
Your mother always insisted you eat a balanced meal before indulging in dessert, so don’t forget the sandwiches and salads. A few specialties include the
Media Noche sandwich with pulled pork, ham and manchego cheese, the Shanghai chicken salad and Wild Rice salad with mixed greens, caramelized walnuts, cranberries, pears and bleu cheese. Show up at this corner shop on the weekends, and you can even grab breakfast—frittatas, pancakes and French toast are just a few of your options. Just know before you go that the shop is
closed on Mondays, which is unfortunate because that is definitely the prime day of the week for a pick me up.
Try out Milk for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!
