April 29, 2007 John West: Soul Without Crooning

johnwest_4.jpg

John West is truly like a breath of fresh air. I heard about him through a friend of mine a while back but never took the time to take a listen. Today during a random outing to Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade I was pleasantly surprised by John West who was giving a live performance right in the middle of the Promenade! Instantly I was drawn into his striped-down soulful delivery, so I sat down and enjoyed the free concert!

John West on his music:

“In life, it’s scary when you’ve never experienced something before, but if a song can be a guide, or a road-map, that’s a beautiful thing,” says the now L.A.-based Southern boy who cites Otis Redding, Cat Stevens, Jill Scott and Jack Johnson as primary influences. “What I love about people’s reaction to my music now is that people tell me it soothes and relaxes them. It helps them get through hard days easier. And the reason I wrote half of these songs was to get through my own hard days.”
