April 9, 2007 New Entourage Season Opens

Like the pop-culture junkies we are, many of us have been waiting for our new Entourage “fix.” Sunday night’s season opener gave us the taste we were after, but we could maybe have used a stronger shot. Read more after the jump…

It felt like not a lot really happened. It was Vince’s birthday, but the party scene was short and uneventful—except for the new conflict between Vince’s old agent, Ari, and his new agent, Amanda. She’s hot, and adds some nice spice, but you can’t help but root for Ari to win Vince back. It’s like Ari’s the jilted lover and you want to see him and the boys rekindle their “romance”. Ari’s character has so much bite and bark that you can’t really see the series carrying on without him, right? We like the new agent, but we love Ari. Plus, the scenes with Ari and Lloyd (Ari’s fabulously gay assistant), which play wonderfully on Ari’s insensitive homophobic nature, are truly endearing and consistently an amusing sidebar to the main story.

In this episode, Ari offers Vince, in the guise of a birthday present, the coveted “Medellin” script, saying to Vince that “Benecio is falling out of love with it.” Amanda is miffed by Ari’s meddling with her new client, especially after she offered Vince a new script based on an Edith Wharton novel (obviously not Vince’s cup of tea).

Johnny Drama spends most of the half-hour (which felt like a total quickie) posing beneath his new TV show’s Sunset Boulevard billboard, hoping to get noticed by adoring fans. Turtle goes way over budget on Vince’s birthday bash and redeems himself by getting sponsors like Skyy vodka, Carvel ice cream, and Victoria’s Secret to lend their wares to make the party both more high-profile and more affordable. But nothing really dramatic happens at the party (on the Queen Elizabeth II, by the way) other than the feud between new agent and old. Ari says the Medellin script is up for grabs, Amanda says it isn’t. Not surprisingly, Vince seems to want to give Ari the benefit of the doubt.

All in all, it’s good to have the boys back, but hopefully the ante will get upped as we delve deeper into this much-anticipated new season.
